Ash Brides | Primer | Human Kins

Mature content Ash Brides is an adult setting. These pages describe peoples shaped by a cruel history. They are written for mature readers.

In the Second Age the world still remembered green, and women held power through Ashcraft, the sorcery later ages still fear by name. With that power they did more than raise cities and dry seas. They remade their own blood into competing ideals of beauty and dominion, each line a living fashion of the empire that ruled them. When that empire fell, the lines remained. Men call them cursed kins, and the name has stuck.

Every cursed kin is female only. A mother of such a line bears only daughters of her own kin, and free tribes of the waste still guard that inheritance with jealous force. What follows is not a ledger of ownership, but a guide to who these peoples are: how they came to be, how they look, and how they live when the world is not busy reducing them to a price.

Against the Darkmaster statistics are given for each entry. Magic is scarce in this age, and Ashcraft is both illegal and hated in the Maned Cities. Capacity is not the same as training, and few teachers survive long enough to matter.

Ashen ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Ashen were the court ideal of the old empire: tall, measured, and deliberately beautiful in the way a well-made blade is beautiful. Their fashion was dignity and distance, the face of rule that expected obedience without raising its voice. Free bands still keep to ruined high roads and forgotten galleries of stone, where they practice old songs and older manners. Among their own they prize composure, memory of lineage, and the quiet certainty that the world once bent for them. Outsiders often find them cold. Ashen call that simply being awake.

Appearance

Their skin runs from ash-porcelain to cool ivory, and their hair is most often white, silver, or a deep ink black. Features are fine and long-boned, with ears that may tip slightly longer than a human's. Bodies tend to lean grace rather than bulk: high carriage, long limbs, and a natural poise that makes even rags look deliberate. Many carry themselves as if the desert were still a hall.

Customs and attitude

Ashen keep careful speech and careful posture. Insult is answered with silence more often than with shouting, and gifts of water or well-told history matter more than loud boasts. They teach their daughters the names of vanished cities and the shapes of stars as the empire once mapped them. To live without memory, they say, is to become only meat that walks.

Duskwife ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Duskwives belonged to the night courts of the late empire, where intrigue was a craft and soft rooms held harder truths than any open plaza. Their fashion prized patience, listening, and the art of being underestimated until the lamp burned low. Free Duskwives still prefer travel after sunset, trade in whispers, and camps that look empty until you are already among them. They are not a people of loud banners. They are a people of doors that open for the right word.

Appearance

Their skin is a deep warm brown to near black, soft in the way lamp-oil softens everything it touches, and not to be confused with the glass-black of Obsidian Brides. Eyes catch gold, amber, or pale silver. Bodies tend toward full curves and a quiet weight of presence rather than angular height. In firelight they look almost gentle. In darkness their eyes give them away first.

Customs and attitude

A Duskwife values discretion as other peoples value water. Stories are told in layers, and a name given too quickly is considered a kind of poverty. They teach daughters to mark the mood of a room before they mark its exits, and to keep one kindness and one knife for every alliance. Loyalty, once given, is deep. Trust, once broken, is not repaired with apologies.

Star-pet ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Star-pets were shaped as living icons for temples and high courts, meant to stand between the mortal and the sacred like a lamp stands between darkness and prayer. Their fashion was awe: beauty so complete it unsettled even those who claimed to own it. Free Star-pets are rare and often travel as seers, singers, or keepers of half-remembered rites. They attract followers without trying and enemies for the same reason. Many Wellwrights watch them with open distrust, as if the old gods might still look out through those too-clear eyes.

Appearance

Their skin holds a faint luminous undertone, as if moonlight had been mixed into flesh, and it shows even under the ash-sun. Features are uncannily symmetrical. Eyes are pale and very clear. Bodies are idealized to the point of theatrical perfection, which some find holy and others find wrong. Animals often stare. Children sometimes do the same.

Customs and attitude

Star-pets treat ceremony as ordinary breath. Meals, greetings, and farewells are given small forms of grace, and a careless word in a sacred place offends them more than open insult. They are not all gentle. Some wear their otherworldly calm like armor and expect the world to arrange itself around their stillness. Those who live long learn to hide how much attention costs them.

Otherlight: +10 on rolls to inspire awe, religious fervor, or deep fascination. Animals and children may fixate. Some Wellwrights treat their presence as an ill omen.

Lapkin ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Lapkins were fashioned as the smallest complete women of the old empire, a living jest and a living treasure at once: the pocket ideal, made for close rooms, quick hands, and the politics of being overlooked. Free Lapkins thrive in caravans, dens, and the crawlspaces of cities, where a low ceiling is an advantage and a loud reputation is a danger. They form tight sister-circles, share news faster than riders, and treat underestimation as a tool rather than an insult.

Appearance

They stand at roughly half the height of most human women, with mature faces and adult proportions scaled to a smaller frame. Curves are often rich for their size, which the Second Age found charming and later ages found convenient to misread. Hair and skin tones vary widely. What does not vary is the impression of a complete person compressed, not a child wearing a woman's shape.

Customs and attitude

Lapkins joke constantly and keep score of every slight. Hospitality among them is fierce: a guest who shares food is protected, a guest who mocks height is cut out of the circle without ceremony. They climb, crawl, and hide as naturally as taller folk walk a street, and they teach their daughters that the world is full of furniture with secrets underneath it.

Snoutkin ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Snoutkin were the feast-and-strength fashion of the Second Age: pig-women in the old sense, broad and vital, made for the table of victory and the work of holding ground. Their empire role mixed celebration with intimidation. Free herds still roam the southern wastes in noisy camps, keeping pigs when they can, wrestling for sport, and treating a good meal as a form of prayer. They are blunt, physical, and rarely impressed by thin elegance.

Appearance

Their skin runs pink to dusky, sometimes with sparse bristle and sometimes almost smooth. Snouts are pronounced, tusks small enough to file or leave sharp by choice. Necks are thick, shoulders strong, and bodies carry real weight in belly, breast, and haunch without apology. Eyes are as clever or as simple as any other person's. The face is porcine. The mind is not a costume.

Customs and attitude

Snoutkin settle arguments with contests more often than with courts. Strength earns voice, and shared food earns kinship for a night. They sing while they work and insult while they love, and a guest who refuses a second helping is suspected of pride or illness. Among free bands, daughters learn early that soft ground is for sleeping and hard ground is for standing your claim.

Sandcat ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Sandcats were the huntress fashion of the empire's wild edges: companions of the chase, scouts of dune and ruin, and living proof that beauty could also stalk. Free Sandcats still keep to night runs, high rocks, and small bands that move like a pride. They mark territory with scratched stone and shared kills, and they judge a stranger first by how carefully she walks.

Appearance

Feline eyes are common, often with vertical pupils, and ears may tip or form fully catlike. Fine down or a soft pelt covers arms, shoulders, or more of the body in sand and tawny tones. Claws can retract. Bodies are athletic and precise in motion, with a grace that looks casual until it becomes a leap. Their human beauty sits under the animal marks rather than replacing them.

Customs and attitude

Sandcats teach by doing. Young hunters learn silence before speech and scent before map. Play is rough and affectionate, and a cuff on the ear can mean either warning or fondness depending on the force. They dislike closed rooms and long speeches. A promise is kept if it was made under open sky.

Coilbride ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Coilbrides came from the temple fashions of flexibility and serpentine grace, where the body itself was taught as an instrument of worship and performance. Their empire role mixed dance, ritual, and the soft power of those who could enter any chamber through a window no guard had measured. Free Coilbrides still keep to ruined shrines and traveling troupes, stretching at dawn, practicing holds and escapes as if both were sacred arts.

Appearance

They look human at first glance, then wrong in beautiful ways: long waists, hips that move as if unjointed, spines that fold further than bone should allow. Some lines show scale patches at the collarbones or hips, and a few carry a forked tongue. Skin is often olive, bronze, or faintly patterned. Standing still they seem painted. In motion they seem liquid.

Customs and attitude

Coilbrides greet one another with measured bows that become more elaborate the deeper the respect. Training is daily and public within the band, because a body unkept is a vow broken. They dislike clumsy bonds and crude rope, not only for pride but for the insult of bad craft. A Coilbride who trusts you will show you how she escapes. A Coilbride who does not will smile and let you think the knots hold.

Obsidian Bride ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Obsidian Brides were born of the covenant between Second Age women and the Obelisks themselves, or so the stories claim. Every Maned City still finds their daughters among its people, and the blood does not split by pillar even when the stones hum with different moods. Free Obsidian Brides often linger near oasis edges and ruin-needles, listening for the low note in the glass. They speak of the network as other folk speak of family: distant, demanding, and never fully gone.

Appearance

Their skin is true volcanic glass-black, a mirror of night stone rather than the deep brown of human Southborn stock. In hard light it may show purple or blood-red undertones. Eyes look like chips of glass or furnace gold. Hair is often absolute black, or shorn to show the sheen of the skull. Bodies tend toward generous strength and fertile softness, as if the pillars meant them to fill the cities they watched.

Customs and attitude

Obsidian Brides mark the rising and stilling of an Obelisk's hum the way sailors mark tide. Offerings of water, oil, or polished bone are left at pillar bases when the city allows it and in secret when it does not. They are proud without needing to shout, and many believe their line will outlast every king who currently claims the wells. To call their skin human black is considered either ignorance or insult.

Cistern-bride ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Cistern-brides were made when the world was already dying of thirst and the old empire answered with a terrible kindness: women who would be wells of life as well as beauty. Their fashion was abundance, calm, and the soft authority of those who can feed a room. Free Cistern-brides still gather around rare springs and shaded hollows, keeping children of many lines when they can and treating shared milk and water as the first law of camp.

Appearance

Four breasts, set in a square or stacked pair, mark the line at a glance. Skin is pale and milk-veined, with cool blue-white rivers under the surface, and it is smooth as polished amphora, without body hair. The overall impression is of a living vessel: soft strength, deliberate curves, and a quiet glow that has nothing of Star-pet radiance and everything of shaded water.

Customs and attitude

Cistern-brides measure wealth in who sleeps fed. They settle disputes by sitting both sides down to drink before they speak, and a guest who wastes water is worse than a thief. Their rites bless births and crossings of dry ground alike. Many are patient to a fault; when that patience ends, the camp learns that a well can also refuse.

Crown-bride ♀ ONLY

Origin and lifestyle

Crown-brides were the late empire's last great fashion: cruelty worn as elegance, judgment made beautiful without any need of horns from hell. They were not demons. They were mistresses who wanted to look like a verdict. Free Crown-brides still gather in small courts of their own making, keep strict etiquette, and treat a broken vow as a stain that must be paid in public. They are feared as often as they are admired, and they prefer it that way.

Appearance

A living crown of bone or keratin rises from the skull in short points, flush as a diadem rather than a beast's horns. Skin runs ash-rose, bruise, or dried blood. Pupils are slit. Nails grow thick and dark, wine or black, and are kept either as jewels or as quiet weapons. Teeth can crowd into a cutting smile or withdraw into a soft, toothless display. Bodies are hyper-sexed hourglass ideals, theatrical and severe at once.

Customs and attitude

Crown-brides love form. Greeting, challenge, and apology each have a posture, and children learn the postures before they learn letters. They keep ledgers of favors and insults with equal care. Mercy is possible, but it is always named as mercy so no one confuses it with weakness. A Crown-bride who laughs with her full teeth is either at ease among sisters or about to end a conversation forever.
